Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh, director, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has been appointed chairperson of University Grants Commission (UGC) by the Government of India on Friday. He has been appointed the UGC chairman for a period of five years, according to the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), following approval from the Prime Minister’s office for the appointment. The post has been lying vacant since April 2017 after the retirement of professor Ved Prakash. TOI last week reported that the order of appointment would be issued before the new year.
Singh has been serving as director of NAAC, an autonomous institution of UGC since August 2015. He has about 34 years of professional experience in different aspects of educational planning and administration, institution building, teaching and training, research and development, international cooperation, among others, in various capacities in different institutions including vice-chancellor of three universities – Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Dr Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar and Devi Ahilya University, Indore.
Singh has contributed substantially in the fields of environmental science, vocational education and value education through various academic assignments including several publications in different forms.
The search-cum-selection committee led by yoga instructor H R Nagendra submitted its recommendations in June 2017 suggesting the name of Singh, along with Anil Sahasrabudhe chairman of All India Council for Technical Education, G C Tripathi, vice chancellor of Banaras Hindu University and Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor of Delhi Technological University, among others.
Currently V S Chauhan is officiating as the chairperson. The term of the officiating chairperson ended in October and was further extended to December 31, 2017.
The post of vice chairperson of UGC too is lying vacant since March this year after professor H Debaraj completed his term. The search committee for the vice chairperson of UGC headed by Higher Education Secretary K K Sharma was formed in April 2017. The committee recommended the shortlisted names. However, on December 4, 2017 the UGC called for fresh nominations on or before January 3, 2018 as the ministry of human resource development is now looking for new nominations for the post and is likely to be filled up by March 2018.
